Substitute Teacher Job Description
Summary:
Substitute Teachers may have a varying amount of background or experience in early childhood education and demonstrate basic understanding of practice and/or pedagogy and curiosity. They support Flex, Apprentice and Mentor teachers in providing high quality early childhood education, in alignment with our mission and vision.
Substitutes facilitate in place of another teacher, as well as perform simple cleaning and food preparation.

Reports to: Directly supervised by Mentor Teachers and reports to the Program Director.

Roles & Responsibilities:
Role: Classroom support
Responsibilities:
Assists mentor, apprentice, and flex teachers in carrying out daily tasks (diapering, feeding, basic documentation)
Complies with all licensing regulations and conducts work in accordance with all Apple Playschools policies, procedures, and best practices
Reports Abuse or Neglect as a mandated reporter
Role: Caretaker for common areas
Responsibilities
Has a sense of ownership of the program, and actively works to improve our community.
Maintains safe, secure, and healthy educational environment
Completes food preparation, opening, midday and closing duties as assigned
Role: Ambassador
Responsibilities:
Serves as an “Apple Ambassador” in the community, spreading positive information about our programs, and communicating feedback from others to the Program Director
Required events:
One in-service per year
One event per year
Essential Requirements & Qualifications
Minimal experience required, but interest in education, child development and willingness to learn is a must
Be age 19 or older
Be able to pass all required background checks and criminal history review
Meet LARA licensing education requirements appropriate to assigned role
Be committed to effective conflict resolution and collaborative communication with staff, families, children, and community partners
Has sound judgment and ability to assess risk appropriately, including the capacity to act quickly and appropriately in case of an emergency
Be “on your feet” for most of the day, able to comfortably bend, move around with young children, ascend or descend a flight of stairs, walk on uneven terrain, work outside in all weather conditions, quickly respond and move from one point to another in the learning environment, be exposed to environmental allergens (dust, animals, etc), and hold, carry, or lift up to 25 pounds
